Starting to Fly, CASA ID and ASIC ID

You don't need a licence to fly as a student pilot because you are under the supervision of a flight instructor and your flight training organisation at all times while you are learning, including when you are flying solo.

There are no medical requirements for learning to fly when you are in the aircraft with your flight instructor. However, if you have any relevant medical conditions or history, you should consider discussing this with a medical practitioner and your flight training organisation before starting to fly, especially if you intend to become a professional pilot. Safety is paramount for you and others so being fully prepared is essential.

To fly solo you need to have:

A> An aviation reference number (ARN), which you can obtain from the CASA online portal. There is no fee for this service. Please ask our staff for assistance.

Once you have your ARN, you should start applying for your Aviation Security Identification Card, known as an ASIC. It is an identification card which is used to identify a person who has been the subject of a background check and who has an operational need to obtain unescorted access at security controlled airports. Go to Aviation ID Australia to apply. Please ask our staff for assistance.

B> You also need to hold a CASA class 2 medical certificate or a recreational aviation medical practitioner's certificate. If you have a recreational aviation medical practitioner's certificate you are limited to conducting solo flights in recreational aircraft only.

C> A General English language assessment (only required for the first category rating).

D> You must be at least 15 years old to fly solo.

Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)

A RPL authorises pilots to fly light, single-engine aircraft as the pilot-in-command independently of a flying school, without supervision. You are also limited to flying within 25 nautical miles of your departure aerodrome, your flight training area and the route between your departure aerodrome and the flight training area.

Plus you can only carry one passenger, however, you can carry more than one passenger if you have a Class 1 or 2 medical certificate or if you have another pilot with you who is authorised to fly the aircraft, occupies a flight control seat and has a Class 1 or 2 medical certificate.

To apply for RPL you must have completed:
- You need to be at least 16 years old to get an RPL.
- Minimum 25 dual flight hours and 5 solo flight hours.
- A General English Language Assessment.
- Pass the RPL theory exam.
- Pass the RPL flight test.ur commercial pilots are trained to the highest standards through an intensive ground and flight training programme that will see them progress through all phases of flight training.

Private Pilot LIcence (PPL)

A PPL allows a holder to pilot an aircraft as pilot-in-command or co-pilot when the aircraft is being operated in a private operation or the holder is receiving flying training.

To apply for PPL you must have completed:
- You must be at least 17 years old to get your PPL.
- Minimum 40 hours flight time as a pilot including 5 solo flight hours , 5 hours solo cross-country and 2 hours instrument flight time.
- The PPL theory which includes subjects such as flight rules and air law, aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, flight planning, power plants, aircraft systems and other relevant subjects.
- An Aviation English Language Assessment.
- Pass the PPL theory exam.
- Pass the PPL flight test. (You need to have a medical certificate Class 2 to take the PPL flight test.)

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)

A CPL authorises you to conduct private and commercial operations (Fly for Hire) . You still must hold the appropriate aircraft category on your CPL and the class or type rating for the aircraft you want to fly.

You can also be the co-pilot in any operation and the pilot-in-command of any operation except the following:
- multi-crew aircraft in charter or regular public transport operations
- an aeroplane certified for single-pilot operations with a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of more than 5700kg in regular public transport operations
- turbojet aeroplanes with a MTOW of more than 3500kg in regular public transport operations.

To apply for CPL you must have completed:
- You must be at least 18 years old to get your CPL.
- Minimum 200 hours flight time as a pilot which must include 100 solo flight hours , 20 hours solo cross-country and 10 hours instrument flight time.
- The CPL theory which includes subjects - flight rules and air law; aerodynamics; meteorology; navigation; human factors; operation, performance and planning; and aircraft general knowledge.
- Pass the seven CPL theory exams.
- Pass the CPL flight test. (You need to have a Class 1 medical certificate to sit the CPL flight test.)

Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate

An Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC) is required by anyone who needs to communicate on an aviation air-band radio frequency and is not already licenced or qualified. This includes aircraft maintenance engineers, maintenance organisations, remote pilot licence (RePL) holders and airport or emergency personnel.

Horizon Airways conducts AROC training in Mackay and Cloncurry.

English Language Proficiency

General English Language Proficiency

The General English Language Proficiency (GELP) will assess your everyday use of English. It does not test your knowledge of aviation terminology and can only be used to apply for RPL without a flight radio endorsement and AROC.

Please allow 30 minutes for the interview. This interview will assess your ability to:

> pronounce words clearly, using an accent that does not cause difficulty in understanding
> convey information in clearly structured sentences without confusion or ambiguity
use your vocabulary to accurately communicate on general and technical topics, without excessive use of jargon, slang or colloquial language
> speak fluently without long pauses, repetition or excessive false starts
respond to communications with actions that show that the information has been received and understood
> exchange information clearly in a variety of situations with both expert and non-expert English speakers while giving and receiving timely and appropriate responses
> use appropriate techniques such as questioning, non-verbal communication and paraphrasing to validate communications.

You will not be tested on aviation terminology.

Aviation English Language Proficiency

The Aviation English language proficiency (AELP) will assess your verbal proficiency in English and aviation terminology.

You will need to hold a AELP to get your recreational pilot licence (RPL) with a flight radio endorsement, private pilot licence (PPL), commercial pilot licence (CPL), air transport pilot licence (ATPL), flight engineer licence (FEL) or air traffic controller (ATC) licence.

Please allow 30 minutes for the interview with our assessor. You will be assessed on pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions. You will be scored between 1 and 6.

If you do not receive a score of 6 you will need to attend a specialist assessor.
